Low Back Pain
Don’t underestimate it. Lumbar (lower back) pain affects 75-85% of the population in a lifetime.
Most back pain episodes resolve spontaneously. By using cryotherapy (ice), anti-inflammatories, exercising lightly and avoiding the activity that caused the pain, can be beneficial.
Unfortunately, chronic (long-term) back pain can be a significant problem for a smaller percentage of the population and medical intervention becomes necessary.
Various diagnoses cause back pain including (but not limited to):
- Muscle Strains
- Osteoarthritis
- Degenerative Disc Disease
- Lumbar Spondylosis
- Lumbar Spondylolisthesis
- Pinched nerve (Herniated Nucleus Pulposus)
- Sacro-iliac Dysfunction
- Facet Joint Dysfunction
Our doctors at Atlanta Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center can diagnose your condition. This is important as different neck conditions require different treatment. The doctors may require X-rays, CT scams, MRI’s and other tests to accurately diagnose your condition.
Various treatment strategies may be recommended, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory or muscle relaxant medication; epidural injections, facet nerve blocks and physical therapy.
Atlanta Sports Physical Therapists are highly trained in spinal diagnosis and intervention. Your medical diagnosis and the results of our continuing evaluations will help us design your treatment strategy. Treatment may include a core stabilization program (to provide internal spinal support); passive stretching techniques; use of modalities including spinal traction, ultrasound, moist heat, ice etc.
Most importantly, Atlanta Sports Physical Therapists are trained in the hands-on techniques of Manual Therapy. Intervertebral (spinal) joint mobilization techniques work to restore motion in each spinal segment to pre-injury levels. Studies support the efficacy of joint mobilization techniques in reducing the intensity of pain flare-ups and in reducing their frequency.
At Atlanta Sports Physical Therapy, we emphasize patient education. We believe that full understanding of your condition and the reasons for our intervention strategies, results in superior recovery.
We invite you to experience the powerful combination of manual therapy, core stabilization and patient education that we provide at Atlanta Sports Physical Therapy.
